Oriental Medicine (Hanuiwon)

Feeling worn down? Strained a muscle?  Caught a cold?  A visit to the Korean Traditional Medicine Clinic (한의원: hanuiwon) can be a great way to shake off the stress and relax.  An hour session of acupuncture and heat treatment will cost about $6 with insurance, and around $25 without it.  Don’t expect it to cure major ailments, but it can really help with minor aches and pains due to stress or overexertion.  It’s also a cool way to experience Korean culture.

Hanuiwons are not hard to find in South Korea.  If you live in an urban area, there are probably several within walking distance.  Usually they are located on the second, third, or fourth floors of commercial buildings.  Just look for a sign that says “한의원.”

Don’t worry if you don’t speak Korean.  We’ve found that the head doctors at most hanouiwons speak basic English.  Besides, it doesn’t take an extensive vocabulary to communicate.  Just point to the part of your body that hurts, and they’ll know what to do.

Visit our permanent page on hanuiwons for more details.

I Got A Raise! (well, kind of…)

Good news for expats working in Korea.  The Korean Won is up against the U.S. Dollar and most analysts believe that it is still undervalued, forecasting continued gains in the future.  Of course, exchange rates are difficult to predict, so we’re not recommending that you go and trade your life’s savings in for won just yet.  However, at least for the time being, expat workers can enjoy higher real salaries, which means more dollars in your bank account when you send those savings home!

The Obligatory “Gangnam Style” Post

Seems like we’re the only Korea-related website that hasn’t posted something about Gangnam Style over the past few months.  You’ve all heard it, but how many of you know the words?  We wanted to share a terrific post from AdvancedKorean.com which explains the Korean lyrics line by line, with an emphasis on difficult vocab and uncommon grammar patterns.

It’s a great way for Korean language learners who already have the basics down to improve their skills and enjoy the jam of the decade.  P.S. Learn this, and you’ll really be able to impress your Korean co-workers and friends at Noraebang!

Foreigner teachers doing the Gangnam Style Dance in Seoul from Yonhap News.  Koreans love foreigners who love Korean things.  If you can sing the song and do the dance, they’ll probably give you your own TV show!
